Building a brand new, world-class Penetration Testing team
Amid multiple large-scale Cyber Security attacks on enterprise clients in the industry, the client wanted to firm up their defence against cybercriminals.
The challenge
They had struggled to attract Penetration Testing professionals to the South Coast of England for 4 days a week onsite, particularly those who were CREST certified.

- 1 x Lead Penetration Tester
- 1 x Senior Penetration Tester
- 1 x Mid-Level Penetration Tester
The solution
Finding CREST-certified Penetration Testers wasn’t too much of an issue, but finding individuals who could work on the South Coast for 4 days per week was. After an initial brief and inconclusive search, we advised them to consider offering the positions as contracts rather than permanent. The flexibility and lucrativeness of a contract could persuade those in permanent employment in London to try their hand at contracting. The client was willing to wait for the right people rather than to get a bum on the seat, meaning a 4-8 week notice period wasn’t a blocker, which is standard practice with contracting.
The results
We targeted Penetration Testers at some of the bigger consultancy firms, ones who were perhaps already used to assignments, albeit on a permanent basis. We were able to offer candidates up to £650 per day, which was enticing, and we had a lot of interest. We secured the Lead Penetration Tester, and as a strong relationship had been built, he offered us a name for the Senior, who we also successfully placed. The Mid-Level was from a consultancy firm, keen to try something new and happy to relocate to the South Coast during the week.
